H. 2" (v. 1, 2, 3, and 4). Consulted by Melville while on board his brother's ship the Meteor, as indicated by his inscription, which documents the ship's rounding of Cape Horn in August 1860. The trip was Melville's second around the cape to the Pacific (the first having occurred during his early whaling voyage aboard the Acushnet in 1841), and occurred "in very bad weather," as described in his 1 September 1860 letter to his son Malcolm (Correspondence 347-48
