In his copy of Hazlitt's Lectures on the English Comic Writers (Sealts No. 263b, p. 89), Melville marked content devoted to William Wycherley's drama "The Plain Dealer" (1676). See p. vii in the prefatory "Advertisement" to the present volume for additional evidence of Melville's interest in Hazlitt's Criticisms on Art, 2nd Series (London: C. Templeman, 1844), of which it is not known whether Melville ever acquired a copy. Liber Amoris, or the New Pygmalion, a fictionalization of Hazlitt's disastrous infatuation with Sarah Walker, first appeared anonymously in 1823.

As Melville notes, Hazlitt's essay "On the Fine Arts" originally appeared in the 1824 Supplement to the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Editions of the Encyclopædia Britannica (Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable), a publication date he also noted on p. 155 of the present copy. Melville inscribed the title of Criticisms on Art: Second Series (also edited by the author's son William Carew Hazlitt, 1834-1913) on p. 8 of the advertisements.
