Melville here possibly has in mind a conversation with Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1788-1805) related by Goethe in "Happy Incident" (partially translated in Thomas Carlyle's Life of Schiller [1825]), where Schiller is said to have dismissed Goethe's theory of "The Metamorphosis of Plants" as an "idea," merely. Melville expands on Goethe's relationship with Schiller in his marginalia to Matthew Arnold's "Preface" to Poems (Sealts No. 21, p. 10-11).
