Melville's notes on this leaf are drawn from "Howleglass, the Merry Jester" in Thomas Roscoe's The German Novelists (Sealts No. 428b.1) and from Francis Palgrave's "Superstition and Knowledge" (Sealts No. 395a). The Latin passage at lines 4-6 appears as Ahab's blasphemous baptismal pronouncement in Moby-Dick (NN MD 489) and served as Melville's "motto (the secret one)" for his whaling narrative, as communicated privately to Nathaniel Hawthorne (see Correspondence 196). For critical studies that address the sources and significance of Melville's notes, see the documentary note to this edition.

As reported by the editors of NN Moby-Dick (959), the present pastedown was laid over the original during recasing, covering two notes by Melville. Before the recasing was performed, the notes were transcribed by Luther Mansfield and Howard Vincent (in Moby-Dick [New York: Hendricks, 1952], 644) in the form reproduced here.
